Switching Cell Phone Services Without The Hassle

Switching cell phone services is known to cause headaches for some, but it doesn't have to. Here are some great steps to take to avoid potential issues.

When you’re fed up with an old service, you’re going to find that switching to a new one is oftentimes your only option.  Whether you want to switch up from AT&T to Verizon or if you want to switch from Sprint to T Mobile as well.  However, this can be a massive hassle in and of itself if you really don’t know what you’re doing. That’s why it’s so vital that you know exactly what you’re going to have to do when it comes to switching and comparing cell phone services, so that you can make the process about as easy as can be.  It’s just a matter of choosing the right type of service.

That’s going to mean that you have to think about a few things actually.  From the type of phone that you have, to whether or not you want to continue to use the same phone and number, and so on and so forth.  But so long as you’re prepared for what this is going to entail, you’ll find that changing any cell phone services is easy enough.  But here are a few tips that can really help you along:

1) First off, do your comparison shopping.

That means deciding who has a better type of plan or feature set than the current company that you’re using right now.  You’re going to find that different types of cell phone companies are always going to offer different services, so you want to have a good idea of what’s on offer beforehand.  Look at what types of plans they feature, whether you want unlimited data, or if you want special features like free mobile to mobile calling and the like.

But don’t forget to think about cost.  Usually when you want to compare cell phone services you want to think about how much the new one is going to cost versus what you were paying in the first place.  You almost always want to find something cheaper for the same or even a better type of plan.  If you can’t at least get this, you may want to think about whether you really want to switch, or your reasons for switching if not financially motivated.

2) Choose the right provider so that you can keep your phone.

This can be important for a few reasons, but you will find that so long as your phone is unlocked or can be, you can take it to literally any type of wireless provider, so long as they can work with that technology.  For example, switching to something like AT&T and Verizon is actually impossible, simply because they both utilize completely different cell phone technology.  AT&T utilizes GSM while Verizon utilizes CDMA.  So if you want to switch on AT&T with the same phone you’d have to go to a company like T Mobile, while with Verizon you’d need something like Sprint.

3) Keep the old service active until the switch is complete.

Usually so that you can switch your cell phone services, you have to keep the old account active until you’re fully switched over.  This way you can make things easy by being able to provide phone records so that the new company can get everything they need.  That’s going to include things like your name, address, current phone number, as well as other important details that serve the purpose. Plus you just don’t want to cancel so that you can ensure you’re still able to use your phone until the new service kicks in, otherwise you could be without a phone for a time, if there’s a break in the activation of your new service.

4) Cancel the old service the second your new one kicks in.

This is vital, because something that you’re going to find with a major phone switch, is that the old service is going to charge you for as long as possible, until you cancel it.  You don’t want to forget after your phone has been on so that you could make the switch in the first place.  Otherwise you’re still going to owe a bill for services you didn’t use, and nobody wants to have to pay two cell phone bills, especially when they’re just for the one phone anyways.
