Mobile phone network providers in the USA typically work with two types of technology. Those that have Global Systems for Mobile (GSM) networks typically use a cell phone SIM card to activate a handset and there can be a number of advantages to using this style of phone.
What is a SIM card?
A cell phone SIM card is basically a small, stamp sized identification chip which is encoded with subscriber details such as the number of the phone and security data. It is used to activate a GSM handset when inserted, as well as enabling the network provider to recognize the subscriber when making a call for billing purposes. A SIM card also has memory available on which details such as phone numbers can be stored for easy use.
How is a SIM card used?
To use a cell phone SIM card it is as simple as opening the handset and sliding the card into the appropriate slot available. Switching on the phone should activate the SIM card and enable the phone to be used straight away. In many cases network carriers can lock their mobile phones such that they will only operate with their own SIM cards. However, these days it is also possible to purchase unlocked mobile phones in which the cell phone SIM card of different network operators can work.
Advantages of a SIM card
Using cell phone SIM cards provides the user with a number of advantages. As contact details can be stored on the SIM card, this means if a phone is damaged or broken the information is not lost. Transferring the SIM to a new phone will enable the details to be accessed and used again straight away, without having to enter them in the new phone. Switching phones is simple with a SIM card, and a new handset with the same phone number can be used simply by inserting the existing SIM. Dual SIM cell phones are also available these days which enable two SIM cards to be placed in one cell. This enables one cell phone with two numbers and this can be useful for those that want to separate personal use and business use phone numbers.
Another advantage which a cell phone SIM card can provide with an unlocked GSM handset is overseas use. Rather than paying the roaming charges a network operator would charge for using their SIM card, this can simply be removed and replaced with a local pre-paid SIM card. This can enable more affordable mobile phone use while on vacation or business travel in another country that supports GSM mobile phone technology.
Deleting data from a SIM card
As a mobile phone is constantly used, the memory on a SIM card can fill up with data. This can be especially the case on smart phones on which video, photo and music files can be stored. However, the data is typically not permanently stored and can be deleted using a few methods. Accessing the data on the mobile device itself and using the delete option will remove it. However, for those that want to save the data before deleting it from the SIM card, many cell phones can be connected to a PC to access the details. This typically means connecting the device to the PC with either a wired or wireless connection. A driver my also have to be downloaded to the PC such that it has the software to handle the SIM card. Once accessed, the data can be saved to the PC and then deleted from the cell phone SIM card.
SIM card care
While a cell phone SIM card is generally fairly robust, it does need to be handled with care if it is removed from a phone. This means storing it properly to ensure it is not scratched or damaged which can affect its functions or make it inoperable. Avoid placing it loosely in a wallet or purse where coins and other items can damage it, and if you often carry spare or extra SIM cards, a holder designed specifically for this purpose can be a good investment. The Proporta Aluminum SIM Card Holder is an example of this.
Using a handset with a cell phone SIM card provides a range of advantages and there are a number of good reasons for choosing them. Some of these are shown above and as long as they are cared for and handled well SIM card handsets should provide you with a user friendly and convenient mobile phone experience.
